Patxaran in Basque, or Pacharn in Spanish is a liqueur that is made from the blackthorn or sloe berries that grow wild in Navarra, Northern Spain. Traditionally made at home, since medieval times, it is now a popular commercial product as well. The Navarre region is the perfect climate for growing sloe berries. The sloe berries are the size and shape of a plum, are black-blue with a purple-blue waxy bloom and are harvested in the fall. Pacharn is aged in chestnut barrels and the finished liqueur is a reddish color and is 20-30 degrees alcohol. Baines has been producing high quality Pacharan for over 150 Years. This provides for a slightly bitter, dark chocolatey finish intermingling nicely with the sloe berry, anise and orange spices displayed. A powerful, intense red, this liqueur is fruit-forward and sweet with a light undertone of anise. It is soft and velvety on the palate and is best served slightly chilled.
