Documents for the Castello date back to 1042, but its existence in winemaking as we know it today only started in 1989. It was then bought by the Greene family of British descent in 2000. Today the castle is operating as a dynamic cultural centre. Ideal as an off-season travel venue, it hosts guests, events and weddings all year round. Due to the unique micro-climate and mixed volcanic soil, they grow three of the most site sensitive varieties together in one small vineyard Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and Alicante. This Sangiovese, in a 1L bottle, is named Sacromontino or Sacred Mountain, it’s a play on the name of their aged Sangiovese as it only has 6 months ageing in stainless steel to produce a fresher more exuberant young wine. Hence the ino ending which is the diminutive in Italian which means smaller or little version.
